Gen. David Petraeus, Distinguished Academics Form Board of Academic Advisors for the Warrior-Scholar Project

Board will ensure that WSP academic programs continue to aid enlisted veterans

Washington, D.C. – The Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) today announced the creation of a new Board of Academic Advisors, including General (Ret) David Petraeus, which will provide expert oversight for WSP’s work creating and delivering high-quality academic boot camps for enlisted veterans and transitioning service members on the campuses of 12 major U.S. universities.

Gen. Petraeus, who holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University and has academic affiliations with the City University of New York, the University of Southern California and Harvard University, spent time last summer with WSP’s Georgetown University program.  Following that experience, he pledged to support WSP’s growth and evolution.

“The Warrior-Scholar Project is a hugely impressive initiative that is already providing considerable assistance to veterans who are planning to pursue a college education,” said Petraeus.

The Board of Academic Advisors will advise WSP on effectively preparing enlisted veterans for transition into and success at higher education institutions. The Board will also develop and act upon a new mission statement for WSP’s academic programs and will ensure that each WSP class is exposed to foundational principles relevant to the full range of educational experiences that may await student veterans.

“Gen. Petraeus, one of the nation’s foremost warrior-scholars, is in excellent company with the distinguished academics from some of our nation’s top universities who have agreed to join WSP’s Board of Academic Advisors and help ensure the continuing quality and relevance of our boot camps to enlisted student veterans,” said Sid Ellington, WSP executive director.

Dr. Corri Zoli, the Research Director at Syracuse University’s Institute for National Security and Counterterrorism, will chair the Board of Academic Advisors.

I know from our own research at Syracuse that military veterans have much to contribute to college life through their leadership skills, mental toughness, teamwork, ability to get the job done in tough environments, professionalism, and commitment to public service, among other skills and attributes,” said Zoli. “I’m honored to be part of the WSP academic advisory team, and to have the chance to get to know student veterans as they navigate their post-service academic journeys. I’m confident this generation of veterans will have as much to contribute to the academy and to the knowledge enterprise as previous generations.”

The full membership of the Board of Academic Advisors is as follows:

WSP’s academic boot camps, held during the summer each year, help facilitate enlisted veterans’ transition from the military to college. They are immersive, intensive programs designed to help military veterans develop and rediscover the skills and confidence necessary to successfully complete four-year undergraduate degrees. The academic boot camps are open to all enlisted veterans and transitioning service members who plan to pursue higher education.

Each WSP boot camp is run by a team of student veterans, and taught by university professors and graduate students. An intensive syllabus composed of both classic and modern scholarly works guides participants as they learn how to frame their ideas in an academic context, think critically, and formulate scholarly arguments. Participants not only learn the subject-matter material; they learn how to learn.

Interested veterans and transitioning service members can apply for the summer 2016 boot camps until April 15, 2016. Apply online at https://warrior-scholar-project.slideroom.com/#/Login.

About the Warrior-Scholar Project

The Warrior-Scholar Project (WSP) runs immersive academic boot camps hosted at America’s top universities for enlisted military veterans. The majority of enlisted personnel exiting the military have not been in a classroom setting for several years, and find it hard to transition, being unprepared for the fundamentally different social and cultural environment. WSP helps veterans rediscover and develop the skills and confidence necessary to successfully complete 4-year undergraduate programs in higher education. WSP unlocks their educational potential and transforms the way veterans view themselves as students.
